Applications are now OPEN for the TYF 2022 cohort here.

Our Mission

The Tamil Youth Fellowship (TYF) is about providing our youth the access to tools, mentorship, and opportunities to create a positive impact in the public service. We are focused on bringing in young Tamil people with unique perspectives and lived experiences to build meaningful programs and policies that are responsive to the needs of our community. Through TYF, we are empowering the next generation of Tamil public servants and political representatives. It is an eight-month program, with the inaugural cohort beginning May 2021. Four months of intensive training and mentoring are followed by a 12-week placement in the office of a Member of Council.

Objectives

The Fellowship will recruit 5 young Tamil leaders and provide them with the training and skills development to set them up for success in their roles. Through their experience in the TYF, these young leaders will apply and build on their political acuity and develop an understanding of the inner workings of government. The voices of our community will be directly involved in the decision-making of our elected representatives.

As we know, Toronto is the fourth largest city in North America and one of the most multicultural cities in the world. It is time that our public service reflects the people that it serves, and it starts with programs like this, that support and uplift our future leaders.

Program Structure

TRAINING

A skill-building course delivered through monthly, day-long workshops allows Fellows to build their political and professional skills. Topics can range from advocacy and campaigning to effective networking and building meaningful professional relationships. Attendance at training sessions is mandatory.

pROJECTS

Fellows team up to take on a project of their design that tangibly addresses outstanding social or educational needs within their community. The projects may be event-based, research-focused, or a media initiative. Expert mentors guide the development and execution of the Fellows' projects.

pLACEMENTS

Fellows spend 12 weeks working with a member of Toronto City Council. The work varies from office to office, serving Toronto's diverse communities through case work, event planning, communications, and administrative support. Placements are paid full-time employment directly with the City.

MENTORSHIP

Our network of mentors provides each Fellow with one-on-one support throughout the program. Mentors guide personal and professional development, assist in goal setting, and help Fellows make meaningful connections that will support them in achieving their goals.
